Last weekend, we headed up to the Laguna Mountain area in Cleveland National Forest for a hike on the Big Laguna Lake Meadow Walk Trail.

The 4.6-mile trail is easy in difficulty, offering a relaxed and enjoyable route through meadows and forest.

It gave us plenty of time to slow down, take in the surroundings, and watch for birds along the way.

The trail moved between open grassy areas and clusters of tall trees, creating a nice mix of habitats.

This variety kept the scenery interesting and made for great birdwatching opportunities throughout the hike.

Mountain Chickadee
One of the most noticeable birds of the morning was the Mountain Chickadee.

We saw a lot of them flitting through the trees, constantly moving and calling as they traveled in small groups.

Acorn Woodpecker
A lot of Acorn Woodpeckers were active throughout the area, their calls echoing across the meadow.

We also spotted a Northern Flicker, adding another woodpecker sighting to the day.

Western Tanager
We were excited to see a Western Tanager and a Hermit Warbler, both bringing bright color to the landscape.

A Lawrence’s Goldfinch also made an appearance, adding another special sighting to the list.

Swallows and Songbirds
Violet-green Swallow
A few Violet-green Swallows darted overhead, moving quickly through the open sky.

Along the trail, we also spotted a House Wren, an American Pipit, and a few Lark Sparrows, each adding to the steady variety of birds.

Bluebirds, Finches, and More
Western Bluebird
A few Western Bluebirds perched in open areas, while a couple of Purple Finches appeared in the trees nearby.
Red-winged Blackbird
We also noticed a California Scrub-jay and a few Red-winged Blackbirds, along with a couple of Western Wood-Pewees quietly perched along the trail.

By the time we finished the loop, we felt relaxed and happy.

The combination of open meadow views, peaceful forest sections, and a wide variety of bird sightings made this hike a great way to spend the morning together.
