We recently set out on the Pfeiffer Falls Trail in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, enjoying a beautiful April day along the central coast. The combination of sunshine and fresh forest air made it an inviting start to our hike.

At 1.7 miles, the trail is moderate in difficulty, offering just enough elevation to keep things interesting. It’s a shorter hike, but one that delivers plenty of scenery and a satisfying sense of exploration.

The path led us through a lush redwood forest, where tall trees towered above and filtered the sunlight into soft, shifting patterns. The peaceful setting made it easy to slow down and take in every detail.

We spotted a Steller’s Jay moving through the branches, its bold coloring and confident presence standing out against the forest backdrop. It paused briefly before continuing on its way.

Wilson’s Warbler
One of the highlights was seeing a Wilson’s Warbler flitting through the foliage. Its bright yellow coloring made it easy to spot, even as it moved quickly between branches.

Dark-eyed Junco
A bunch of Dark-eyed Juncos kept us company along the trail, hopping along the ground and darting into the underbrush. Their constant activity added life to every section of the hike.

Arriving at Pfeiffer Falls was a rewarding moment. The gentle cascade, surrounded by greenery, created a peaceful spot where we paused to take it all in before heading back.
A Perfect Coastal Forest Hike

By the time we finished, we felt refreshed and grateful for the experience. The mix of forest scenery, flowing water, and simple but memorable bird sightings made this hike a wonderful way to spend time together in Big Sur.
