We recently spent a crisp March morning hiking the Harvey Moore to East Side Loop Trail in Rancho Cuyamaca State Park near San Diego. The air was chilly but the sunshine made the morning feel bright and refreshing, perfect for a peaceful walk through the park.

A Comfortable Loop Through the Park

The trail is about 3.1 miles long and easy in difficulty, making it a relaxing route to explore.

The gentle terrain allowed us to move at an easy pace and spend more time watching the landscape and listening for birds.

Fresh Mountain Air and Quiet Trails

The cool mountain air and clear skies made the hike feel especially refreshing. The trail wound through open areas and patches of trees, creating a calm setting where the sounds of birds carried easily through the forest.

A Splash of Blue

One of the first birds we noticed was a Western Bluebird perched along the trail. Its bright coloring stood out beautifully in the morning light and felt like a cheerful welcome to the hike.

Towhees and Sparrows in the Brush

Along the trail, we saw a California Towhee moving through the underbrush.

Not far away, a couple of Fox Sparrows scratched at the ground, occasionally pausing before disappearing back into the vegetation.

Woodpeckers at Work

A few Acorn Woodpeckers were active in the trees, their calls echoing through the forest as they moved from branch to branch.

Later in the hike we also spotted a Northern Flicker, adding another woodpecker to the morning’s list.

There was plenty of activity in the treetops as well.

We saw a lot of California Scrub-jays moving around the area, and an Anna’s Hummingbird zipped past us before quickly disappearing among the branches.

A Special Quail Encounter

One of the most exciting sightings came when we noticed a group of Mountain Quails moving quietly through the landscape.

Watching them together felt like a special moment and was easily one of the highlights of the hike.

By the time we completed the loop, we felt refreshed and grateful for the quiet beauty of Rancho Cuyamaca.

With the crisp air, sunny skies, and a wonderful mix of birds — including a few Common Ravens passing overhead — it turned into a memorable morning on the trail.
