Last weekend, we headed back to the Laguna Mountain area in Cleveland National Forest for a hike on the Garnet Peak Trail.

At 2.3 miles, the Garnet Peak Trail may be short, but its moderate difficulty gives it just enough challenge to feel satisfying.

The steady climb kept our legs working and made the views at the top feel well earned.

The sunshine lit up the surrounding hills and distant desert views, making every turn along the trail feel scenic. The open stretches gave us wide panoramas and plenty of opportunities to pause and take it all in.

Early in the hike, we spotted a Red-tailed Hawk soaring high above us. Watching it circle effortlessly in the bright sky added a dramatic and beautiful touch to the morning.

A few Common Ravens also made their presence known, gliding across the landscape and calling to one another. Their playful aerial movements brought extra life to the wide-open views.

Closer to the ground, a California Towhee perched calmly on a bush near the trail.

The Unexpected Highlight

The true highlight of the hike came when we spotted a group of four Mountain Bluebirds. Seeing even one would have been special, but four together felt extraordinary — especially since they are rare in this area.

Their vibrant blue coloring seemed to glow in the sunlight. We stood quietly for a few moments, taking in the rare sight and appreciating how lucky we felt to witness it.
